Orville William Gifford, 92, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Thursday, October 17, 2013, at home.

Born June 21, 1921, in Lynch, Nebraska, the son of John and Ethel M. (Collins) Gifford, Orville married Ona Lee Hendren on October 7, 1947, in Faribault, Minnesota.

Orville was a veteran of the US Army, having served during World War II. He was a manager for many years at Fairview Cemetery in DeKalb, before becoming a land developer in St. Charles, Minnesota. He returned to Illinois and was in sales at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Rockford. He later became a landscaper for Andy’s Professional Lawn Care. He was a volunteer chauffeur for anyone needing a ride to doctor’s appointments and other places.

Orville was very involved in church, as Sunday school teacher, Bible study leader and mentor and friend to many, at Glad Tidings Assembly of God, DeKalb, and as a former charter member of Bethany Baptist Church, DeKalb, and a member of DeKalb VFW. He also was a Boy Scout leader.

He is survived by his children, David (Denise), Daniel (Theresa) and Colleen, all of DeKalb; grandchildren, Justin, Benjamin, Renee (Mike) Scheffers, Zachary (Jennifer) Johnson, Daniel, Eric (Jamie) Gifford; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Andrew, Connor, Cody and Elaina; sister, Velma Silva of Oregon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ona Lee, in 2006; son, Curtis, in 2009; his parents; and 11 brothers and sisters.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, October 21, at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church, 2325 North First Street, DeKalb, with the Rev. Michael Massey officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Rockford, with full military honors.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, October 20, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb.
