PEORIA - Dorothy Mae (Flynn) McNamee, 88, of Peoria, passed peacefully on to Heaven at 4:45 p.m., Monday, September 30, 2013, at Proctor Home in Peoria.

Dorothy Mae was born May 1, 1925, in Minneapolis, MN, to Raymond and Adeline (Pouliott) Flynn. She married John Robert “Bob” McNamee on February 16, 1946, at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis. Dorothy and Bob met while college students at the College of St. Teresa and St. Mary’s College in Winona, MN. They married when Bob returned from World War II. He preceded her in death on January 20, 1994.


She was also preceded in death by one infant son, James; her parents; a sister, Jeanne Wikman; and brother, Dr. Thomas Theodore Flynn.


She is survived by six children, Margaret (Parker) Blevins of Austin, TX, John Robert (Cami) McNamee, Jr. of Leesburg, VA, Barbara Strand of Pekin, Elizabeth (Mitch) Potter of Shorewood, MN, Cathleen (Dennis) Paul of Herndon, VA, and Susan (James) Erdman of Chenoa, IL ; twelve grandchildren, James McNamee, Megan McNamee, Grant Blevins, Allison (Blevins) Stivers, Cathleen (Strand) Litz, Andrew Strand, Kyle Potter, Laura Potter, Michael Erdman, Katherine Erdman, Brian Paul, Betsy Paul; twelve great-grandchildren; and her brother, Lloyd Flynn of Edina, MN.


Dorothy graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis, and attended the College of St. Teresa in Winona, MN, and the University of Minnesota.


Dorothy devoted her life to raising her six children and volunteering in her church, community, and her children’s school and extra-curricular activities. She served in the parish Mary and Martha Society, as a Peoria County election judge, in the Peoria League of Women Voters and Peoria Birthright Association.


Dorothy was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church for 50 years, and attended Saturday evening Mass two days before her death.


Dorothy lived a joyous full life. The highlight of each year was hosting the annual three-day McNamee Christmas reunion in her home on Briarwood Lane. She loved visiting her children and grandchildren in their homes across the country. Dorothy and Bob also enjoyed their annual February vacation in Maui and travels to China, Egypt, the Holy Land, Australia, Russia, Ireland, and throughout Europe.


For relaxation, Dorothy played bridge, completed her daily cross word puzzles, read extensively, and participated in the many activities at Proctor Home. Dorothy was an accomplished in needlework and many of her complex and artistic projects decorated her surroundings.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Proctor Place for their wonderful care.

Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 3, 2013, at Holy Family Catholic Church. Franciscan Friars will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Cremation rites have been accorded. Entombment of cremains will be in Resurrection Mausoleum at a later date.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church.
