Ellie Whitmore

Born: March 14, 1920
Died: September 14, 2013

Ms. Whitmore, 93, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Lake Forest Good Samaritan Village in Denton. She was born March 14, 1920 in Denton to Harry Gregory Whitmore, a chemistry teacher at Texas Woman’s University, and Elizabeth Sims Nelson Whitmore, a former school teacher. She attained a Master’s Degree in Library Science and became a college librarian for the University of Texas in Austin and at North Texas State University. She served her country in WWII in the Women Army Corps and as an aviation cadet.

She is survived by her brother Page Gregory Whitmore, 89, nephews, Bruce Gregory Whitmore, Clark Thomas Whitmore and nieces Laura Page Whitmore Ranum and Diane Elizabeth Whitmore, who have fond memories of her, especially of her radiant smile.

She was an active member of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Denton. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe, but always looked forward to returning to her home adjacent to the TWU campus.

Ms. Whitmore was lovingly cared for by the staff of Lake Forest Good Samaritan. Her family roots could be traced to the state of Virginia. She is a direct descendent of Patrick Henry and Pocahontas.

Viewing will be Wednesday, September 18, 2013 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at DeBerry Funeral Directors. Graveside services will be Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Roselawn Memorial Park.
