Winifred Pauline (Van Gundy) Reed, age 95, died at Meadowlark Hills, Manhattan, Kansas Sunday, September 1, 2013. She was born September 10, 1917 in Calumet, Oklahoma to Delbert Best Van Gundy and Carrie Catherine Knott Van Gundy. In that her father was a Methodist pastor, Winifred attended several schools in Oklahoma and graduated from Hinton High School in Oklahoma. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma in 1940. Prior to her marriage she taught school at Weaver School, Frederick, Oklahoma. On June 10,1941 she married Jesse R. Reed in Mountain Park, Oklahoma. After her marriage to J.R. they made their home in Alhambra, California where he worked for Lockheed Aircraft Company. Their two sons Jim and Don were born during that time. Following World War II and J.R.'s military service, they returned to Oklahoma where J.R. farmed and Winifred taught in the Jefferson, Oklahoma school. J.R. return to aircraft work and the family moved to Mulvane, Kansas in 1956. Winifred taught in the Mulvane Junior High School until her retirement in 1980. She loved teaching—for many years teaching language arts and then returned to college (Wichita State) where she became certified to teach art, which became her teaching passion. She was awarded Master Teacher. In 1998, Winifred moved to Meadowlark Hill Retirement Home in Manhattan, Kansas. Winifred was a member First United Methodist Church, Manhattan and earlier had been a member of Mulvane United Methodist Church, and the Jefferson Methodist Church. She was always very active in United Methodist Women. A very accomplished soprano, Winifred did frequent solos and was always in demand for weddings, funerals and singing leads in choral works. She also directed the choir at Mulvane United Methodist Church. She served for many years on the Mulvane Public Library Board. Survivors include son Jim and his wife Sherry of Manhattan, and son Don and his wife Shirley, of Boulder, Colorado. Grandchildren, Bryan Reed of Austin, Texas, and Aaron Reed and his wife, Kara of Tonganoxie, Kansas. Kristin Campbell Reed and her husband Corbett Campbell of San Francisco, and Adam Reed and his wife Carolyn of Lafayette, Colorado. Great grandchildren, Bryn and Grant Reed of Tonganoxie, Ellery Campbell of San Francisco, and Gracie Reed of Lafayette, CO. Winifred was the sole survivor of her generation in her family. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1996, by her parents, and her three sisters and their husbands. Services will be held at 10am Friday at Mulvane United Methodist Church. Relatives and friends are welcome at Smith Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby on Thursday from 5-7pm. Memorials have been established for the Mulvane United Methodist Church Chancel Choir and the Good Samaritan Fund of Meadowlark Hills Retirement Center.
