Leonard M. Scruton

U.S. VeteranLeonard "Len" Scruton, age 97 years, of Clintonville passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at KindredHearts in Clintonville.

Leonard Mark Scruton was born on April 24, 1916 in Royalton, Wisconsin, to Mark and Alma (Hoger) Scruton. After graduating from Seymour High School, Len went on to Bolby Business School for two years. In his early years, he did factory work at the Nichols Milk Plant and with the Outagamie Farm Producers. Len was united in marriage on July 2, 1941 to Mary M. Martin at the Congregational Church in Nichols. He entered the U.S. Army and served in WWII from December 1942 to December 1945. He was stationed with the 194th Chemical Depot Company and earned several medals, but most importantly 4 Overseas Service Bars. Following the military, he started with the United States Postal Service in Nichols, and after 26 years retired as Postmaster in 1972.

Throughout the years, he was very active with the Shriners, the Masonic Blue Lodge, and the Scottish Rite Masonry. Len volunteered in Nichols as a School Board Clerk and as a Firefighter with the Fire Department. He is a former member of the Congregational Church in Nichols. In 1994 the couple settled in Clintonville. He is also a lifelong member of the American Legion and VFW Post. Len enjoyed the outdoors, especially for hunting and fishing. He was a handyman who liked woodworking and building things with his hands. Golfing in both Seymour and Clintonville was Len's other favorite pastime.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Mary, and two grandsons, Rick (Robin) Scruton of Boise, Idaho, and Jeff (special friend Roberta) Scruton of Berlin. There are 5 great grandchildren; Mikayla, Julia, Jacob, Jeff Jr. (friend Casey), and Luke (friend Angela). There are 3 great-great grandchildren, Kyle, John & Jace. He is further survived by many other relatives and friends. Len is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Richard, and a sister, Margaret (Cedric) Kuhn.

The family wishes to thank all the nurses and staff at KindredHearts and Heartland Hospice for the compassionate care given to Len. Thank you also to a good friend, Duane Killips, for always being there when needed.

A Masonic Service will be held on Saturday, August 3rd, 2013 at 3:00 PM at the Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Clintonville. The Masonic Lodge #197 Chaplain will officiate and burial will follow at St. Rose Cemetery, Clintonville. Military Honors provided by members of the American Legion Post #63 and the VFW Post #664, both of Clintonville. Friends may call on Saturday from 1:00 PM until time of the service at the funeral home.
