Dr. Robert O. deVette, age 93, went to be with his precious Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 20, 2013. He was born November 21, 1919 in Portland, Michigan.
Bob graduated from Wheaton College in 1941. He then served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 until 1945. He received an MA from Wheaton Grad School in 1949, another MA from Universidad Interamerican Mexico in 1951 and a PhD from Florida State in 1953. He taught in the Spanish Department of Wheaton College from 1947 until 1982 and was chairman of the Foreign Language Department from 1969 until 1972. He also served as president of the Illinois Foreign Language Teachers Association.
While teaching at Wheaton, Bob met and married Helen Siml, a teacher for many years in Wheaton's English Department. Both Bob and Helen dearly loved their students and through the years kept in touch with many of them and followed their careers with great interest. Helen died a year ago June after 52 years of marriage and Bob deeply missed her.
He loved collecting stamps and was always willing to help with whatever needed fixing.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, his parents, J. M. deVette, and Ethel deVette, and sister, Juanita .
His survivors include nephews: Arthur Siml jr., Martin Siml and Timothy Siml and nieces: Cynthia Bonga, Anita Armstrong, Debbie Frank and Valorie Siml. He also leaves many great and great great-nephews and nieces.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 25 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in North Riverside, Illinois. A memorial luncheon will be held at 12:00 p.m. at the Harbor House at Wheaton College, 510 Washington, Wheaton, IL.
