Born: March 20, 1928
Died: July 16, 2013
Dot passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, with her family at her side in Redding, California.
Born to Julia and Joseph Salvador, Dot grew up in the small California town of Durham, near Chico. She met her future husband Gene Herndon during her high school years; they were married in 1947 and moved to Redding where they raised their five children.
Dot was a devoted wife and mother who took great joy in her family. It is a testament to her character that all her children are a solid loving family unit today.
In 1977 Dot helped her husband Gene start Shasta Wholesale Meat Company. She was the bookkeeper until 2004 when they sold the business to retire. Music held a special place in Dot's life. She grew up playing the violin, clarinet, and piano. She had a beautiful singing voice and was a member of the St. Joseph Church choir and the chorale at Shasta College. Tennis was another love of Dot's. In her early 40's she learned to play tennis and became an avid player and fan of the sport. In the 1970's she helped start the first City Women's Tennis League. Sewing and quilting were other passions. Dot sewed wedding dresses for her girls and Halloween costumes for her children and grandchildren, and she made quilts for the newborns.
Dot is survived by her husband Gene, and their five children, Leigh Ann Taaffe, Brock (Cheryl) Herndon, Marcie (Coby) Roberts, Scott (Laura) Herndon, and Debbie Wade, 12 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister June Welch.
The Herndon family will be forever grateful to the caregivers at Lavender Hills Assisting Living and to Cheri Grandfield who provided such tender loving care through the last several years. The care and support provided by Mercy Hospice was invaluable.
Dot will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
