John Thurston Hughes, Jr. died peacefully on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at the Kirkwood Assisted Living Residence in Redding, California.
John was born in Denver, Colorado on December 20, 1923 to John Thurston Hughes, Sr.and Ethel Angeline Chamness Hughes. He graduated from Wilson High School, Long Beach, California in 1942, before serving in the Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945. On December 9, 1945 John married Lolita Mae Hellwegen. He earned a Bachelor's degree in English Literature, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business, from the University of Washington in 1949. He obtained his Teacher Credential from Long Beach State College in 1951, his Master's Degree in Management from the Claremont Graduate University in 1976, and worked for 32 years as the Assistant Treasurer for the Claremont Colleges. He lived in Southern California most of his adult life; Long Beach, Buena Park, Chino, and Hemet before moving to Redding in 2000.
John was the First Reader of the Bellflower Christian Science Church, and a member in good and lifelong standing of the Masonic Lodge. He was an avid reader with a lifelong study of metaphysics, the Bible and Vedanta. His other interests included chess, bridge, bicycle riding, and tarot cards.
No one could make you laugh more in one sit down meal! What a punster! John was a man who expressed his appreciation and gratitude to everyone, all day long. His favorite saying or mantra in his final years was 'Gratitude is riches. Complaint is poverty.' And, based on this philosophy of life, he was a very wealthy man.
John recited this prayer, written by Mary Baker Eddy, before every meal: "Thy kingdom come. Let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!"
John is survived by Lolita, his beloved wife of 67 years, his children, Cari Lyn Hughes Stanton (Happy Stanton), Glenn Thurston Hughes, and Paul Erik Hughes; eight grandchildren: Cami Stanton Coyle, Cari Stanton, Tori Hughes, Niki Hughes, Michael Hughes, Eli Hughes, Samantha Hughes, Katie Hughes, and three great grandchildren: J.T. Coyle, Hannah Coyle, Tristin Coyle.
John is also survived by his best friend and brother Harry Edwin Hughes, his sister-in-law June Christensen, and many nieces, nephews and devoted friends.
A celebration of John's life will take place on Saturday, August 10, at 2:00 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living in Redding, California.
