Ruby "VoVo" Martz, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 10, 2013, at the Lodge of the Wabash nursing home in Vincennes, Indiana.
She was born on July 17, 1920, in Strong City, Oklahoma, and was raised in Beaver County and Norman, Ok.
She was the daughter of Warren and Rozella Martz.
Ms. Martz graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1942, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. She received a Bachelor of Library Science degree in 1949 and a Masters of Library Science degree from the University of Illinois in 1952. Shortly thereafter, she embarked on an extraordinary teaching career.
During the 1960s, she was the Director of the Educational Materials Center for the African-American Institute, traveling throughout Africa. Ms. Martz was an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Library Science at Haile Selassie University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She also established a library for Nkumbi International College in Zambia, Africa.
Upon returning back to the United States, Ms. Martz went on to work as a visiting lecturer at the Graduate School of Library Science for the University of Denver in 1969. Ms. Martz was a full-time Librarian at Waubonsee Community College in Aura, Illinois from 1971-1985.
In 1985, she retired and moved to Bloomington, Indiana to be closer to her son and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her only adopted child, Dr. Sebastian Kiteka; parents; her brothers: Leland, Bill and Loyd.
Survivors include her grandson’s: Samuel Kiteka, Houston, Texas, and John Kiteka, Bloomington, Indiana; several great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Fredrick& Son Funeral Home in Vincennes. The funeral will be held at 11:30AM on Tuesday, June 18th at the funeral home; burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Vincennes.
