Joel Lee Allen

Born: December 29, 1950
Died: May 31, 2013

U.S. VeteranJoel Lee Allen was born December 29, 1950 in Alturas, California to Elmer Pete Allen and Irma Teague. He died May 31, 2013. His siblings were Mable Allen, Barbara Allen and Carl Allen. He was preceded in death by his son Luke Allen. He is survived by his son Cody Allen, daughter-in-law Melanie and grandsons Travis and Garrett who reside in Anderson, California.

Joel was a generous, caring and industrious man who was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army.

Joel was employed by Alturas County in the 1980's and as a test of his creativity he was challenged to figuring out how to provide and install the gold ball that adorns the top of the flag pole. After much thought and consideration he scavenged a discarded salad bowl that previously had been a part of a local restaurant. We are told that the bowl is still on top of the flagpole today.

For the last 20 years Joel was the ranch hand and manager of Peace Valley Ranch in Igo, where he resided. There is significant evidence on the ranch of his creativity and mechanical ingenuity. He was an excellent carpenter and craftsman.

Joel was an avid reader and student of civil war battles. On the occasion to visit several civil war battlefields first hand, Joel listened carefully to the various Docents and National Park Service personnel as they described various battles and the outcomes. He was not at all hesitant to correct the narrative if it varied from the historical record.

Joel was an Irishman with a point of view. He took suggestions well but did not hesitate to present his ideas. On an occasion when he was reminded to be especially careful with regard to fire, he indicated that nobody knew the danger of fire better than his family. He said that his Irish reached all the way back to Mrs. O'Leary of the Chicago fire notoriety and that he didn't want to repeat a family mistake.

Joel will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo on August 14, 2013, at 12:30pm.

Arrangements handled through Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel in Redding (243-1525).
