PEORIA – Suzanne Marie Simkins, 63, of Peoria, passed away at 1:32 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Cornerstone Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center.
Suzanne was born on July 24, 1949, in Peoria to Raymond and June (Cashen) Simkins. They preceded her in death.
She is survived by her siblings, Connie (Jack) Bennett of Peoria, Terry (Duana) Simkins of Peoria Heights, and Michelle (Tony) Hughes of Metamora; niece Stacy (Kris) Rueter of Sunnyland; great-nephew, Tanner Rueter; and her dog Pepe.
Suzanne worked for 25 years at Proctor Hospital as a nurse’s aide and a medical supply technician. She later volunteered as a special caregiver for her mother.
She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church. Her faith in God was the biggest part of her life.
Suzanne was devoted to her family, friends, and her pet dog, Pepe. She devoted time and gifts to the sick and needy children, adults, and neglected animals through Adopt-A-Pet. She put others first, and was an example of a caring, courageous person throughout her life and during her battles with heart disease and cancer.
She was artistically talented, and enjoyed people, animals, reading, crafts, music, cooking, floral arranging, and painting.
Her generosity and laughter were always available to all her friends and relatives. She was a joy to be around.
Suzanne will be remembered for her strong, courageous spirit, and for her love of people and animals.
She was an avid supporter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, OSF Hospice, Cornerstone Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, and Adopt-A-Pet.
The family would like to thank the staff of OSF Hospice and Cornerstone for their loving care though her long, difficult journey.
A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Father Thomas Taylor will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial of cremains will be in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
