Marjorie Lucille Gowin

Marjorie Lucille Gowin, 96, a resident of Eastland Retirement Community in Auburn, formerly of Springfield, died peacefully at St. John’s Hospice, Thursday, May 2, 2013, with her family by her side. Marjorie was born on June 30, 1916 in Morrisonville, IL the oldest daughter of Charles D. and Lucille Simpson Cloyd. She married Robert E. Gowin on June 12, 1938. They farmed in the Palmer-Morrisonville area and raised their four children there. He preceded her in death in 1985. Their children, Marilyn of New York City and Chester of Morrisonville, sister, Martha Becker of Seattle, brothers Robert of Ohio and Winston of St. Louis also preceded her in death.

Marjorie was a graduate of Taylorville High School and a 1936 graduate of Illinois State University with an elementary teacher degree. She began her teaching career at Friendship School, a one room school near Taylorville. She also taught in the Tovey Grade School until her retirement in 1974.

Marjorie loved travelling with family and friends. She was a voracious reader, a keen pinochle player, and enjoyed growing plants and flowers, as well, as keeping in touch with relatives and friends. She will always be remembered for her kindness and sweet personality. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Springfield, the United Methodist Women, and the Abigail Circle. She belonged to the Retired Teachers’ Association, Christian County Farm Bureau, and the Lady Landowners’ Association. In 1938, she joined the Order of the Eastern Star, the Ansarettes, the Daughters of the Nile, and was Past Worthy Priestess of the Medinah, Mecca and Jepptha Shrine, of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. She was a 30+ year breast cancer survivor and participated annually with her daughter, Nancy, in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Marjorie was survived by her daughter Nancy (Scott) Elwell of Glenarm; son, Robert (Rose) Gowin of Morrisionville; grandchildren, Brent (Lori) Forden of Morrison, CO, Julie (Richard) Taber of Sheridan, Rodney (Jody) Gowin of Freeport, Ronda Gowin of Springfield, Craig (Lindsay) Gowin of Chicago, Jeana Gowin of Wheaton, and Darla (Rick) Richno of Springfield; 10 great grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews.
Cremation rites will be accorded by Cremation Services of Central Illinois, Chatham before public services.
Memorial gathering: Her family will greet friends from 10-11am, Saturday, May 4th, at Staab Polk Memorial Home, 8855 State Rt. 4, Chatham, IL 62629.
Memorial service: 11am, Saturday, May 4th, at Staab Polk Memorial Home, Chatham with Dr. Bob Swickard officiating.
Memorial Contributions may be made in lieu of flowers in Marjorie’s memory to the Sangamon County Relay for Life of the American Cancer Society, 687 East Linton Avenue, Springfield, IL 62703.
