Richard J. Cardinal

Died: April 02, 2013

Richard “Dick” J. Cardinal, 82, Vincennes, passed away Tuesday April 2, 2013 at Bridgepointe Health Campus. A former over the road trucker and a life long farmer, he was born January 20, 1931 in rural Knox county, to Edmond and Nora (Meyer) Cardinal where he lived most of his life on the family farm. Dick served in the United States Army as a tank operator in the Korean War from August 1953 to June 1955. He married Barbara Roellegen in February 1953. She precedes him in death in June 1961 along with their infant daughter, Mary Ellen. He married Carolyn Blagrave in November 1987, and she preceded him in death in September 2011.
Dick is survived by his son Patrick R. Cardinal; daughters, Janet Devine and her husband Barry, Kathy Horrall and her husband Tom, and Susan Boyles and her husband Don; grandchildren, Jim and Jason Boyles, Michele McGuire, Angela Horrall, Rick Horrall, Barbara Wright, Andy Devine, and Janna Deckard; 23 great-grandchildren; brother, Lawrence “Pooch” Cardinal; nephews, Ed Cardinal and his wife Susie, Ron Cardinal and his wife Amy; great-nephews, Ryan, Aaron, Larry, and Jordan Cardinal; step-children, Beth Stevenson and her husband Tom, Susan Lay and her husband Joe, Diana Hatcher, Bob Blagrave and his wife Shelly, Karen Scott and her husband Keith, and Mary Jo Mathis and her husband Rick; brother-in-law John Roellgen of Baldwyn, MS; and sister-in-law Lettie Jo Russell of Harlingen, TX.
He is preceded in death by his parents, spouses, daughter and sister-in-law, Patty Smith Cardinal.
The family will receive friends on Friday April 5, 2013 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home Vincennes Chapel, 313 Church St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday April 6, 2013 at 10:00 AM at St. John’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Dave Fleck officiating and burial following at St. Vincent’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the St. Vincent’s Cemetery fund.
