Lee Eldon Bowles

Died: March 15, 2013

Lee Eldon Bowles of Lompoc passed away Friday, March 15, 2013 at the age of 79. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah into a military family and lived in numerous locations. As a family man his career led him to various states and countries before establishing a home base in Lompoc in 1968.

He fought in the Korean War with the 45th division attaining the rank of SFC and earning the Bronze Star and served as a reservist with the Navy and Army. He also had a career with FEC at Vandenberg Air Force Base. While employed with FEC and after the birth of his ninth and last child, he began attending Allan Hancock College and finished with Chapman University, earning a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Psychology graduating Mangum Cum Laude. He began teaching Psychology and Electronics for Allan Hancock College in the evenings. Later he was employed with Litton & Colsa in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

He proudly served on the Santa Barbara County Grand Jury, was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and graduated from the Lompoc Citizen’s Police Academy.

But the most enjoyable volunteer work was taking care of, spoiling and loving his grandchildren. He was a master of making cinnamon rolls in which all of the grandchildren participated. And he was well on his way to completing his thesis on a 1001 ways to use epoxy.

Lee is survived by his wife, the angel of his life of 60 years, Eleanor “Bits” Bowles of Lompoc, his mother Leota Bowles of Woodlawn, Tennessee, son Lee (Armando) Bowles, Jr. of Sun Valley, California, son Bill (Sue) Bowles of Peru, Nebraska, son Jim (Melody) Bowles of Orcutt, daughter Kathy (Dave) Erb of Monument, Colorado, son Deane (Melody) Bowles of Kingsport, Tennessee, daughter Laura (Larry) Luna of Lompoc, daughter Cherie (Michael) Riley of Santa Barbara, son David (Dee Dee) Bowles of Georgetown, Texas, daughter Julie (Todd) Chewning of Santa Maria, a multitude of grandchildren and great grandchildren too numerous to count. He is also survived by his Brother Otis Bowles, Jr. of Ottumwa, Iowa, brother Don Bowles, Kent, Ohio and his sister Pat Kennedy of Woodlawn, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his father Otis Bowles, Sr. and his nephew Mark Bowles of Dallas, Texas.

He has reached his final destination, in his words, “Just over the hill and around the bend”.

The memorial service will be on Saturday, March 23, at 11am at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 2800 Harris Grade Road in Lompoc, followed by inurnment with military honors in the church’s memory garden.
