Frances Barbara Raimondi passed away peacefully in her home in Alameda on February 2, 2013.
Frances was born on December 20, 1915 in West Oakland to Sicilian immigrants Guiseppi and Maria (Comande) Palermo. Frances was the third of four girls in the Palermo family. Her older sisters were Mary and Josephine and her younger sister was Sarah. Until her death, Frances was the last surviving sister.
Frances attended local schools and worked at various jobs during the Depression, including Cardinet Candy Co., the Star Theater, and Owl Drug Store in downtown Oakland. In 1936, Frances met the love of her life, Billy Raimondi, introduced by a mutual friend, Harry “Cookie” Lavagetto, a former teammate of Billy’s on the Oakland Oaks professional baseball team. Frances and Billy mar- ried in 1937 and subsequently raised their two daughters, June and Judy, and son Bill Jr. in Alameda. Frances and Billy were married for 73 years, until Billy passed away in October, 2010.
Frances was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Throughout much of her life, Frances took great interest in helping elderly friends, neighbors, and relatives attend to their needs. In her final years, her kind- ness was repaid by younger friends, neighbors, and rela- tives.
After three years of being bedridden, Frances passed away peacefully in the presence of her three children. Frances is survived by her daughters June Ogden (Jim) and Judy Harris, son William Raimondi (Cathy), and sister- in-law Lorraine Dahl. Frances is also survived by eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and numer- ous nieces and nephews. Private services are planned. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery, Oakland.
