U.S. VeteranRetired Army Colonel Robert Lee Fairchild, Jr. 79 of Rustburg, died Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Bob was born to the late Robert, Sr. and Florence Fairchild on July 14, 1933 in Langston, Oklahoma.

Bob graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1950 and received as BS in Math from the Hampton Institute in 1954. During his time in college, Bob participated in Army ROTC, where he received the distinction of Distinguished Military Student (DMS). He was commissioned in 1954, and retired as a Colonel with 23 years of military service having served overseas tours in Vietnam and Germany, and other stateside locations. He was awarded numerous awards and decorations, notably the Bronze Star with three Oak Clusters, and also commanded a battalion in the Third Armored Division in Friedberg, Germany. Upon retirement, Bob began a second career as a commercial loan officer with Central Fidelity Bank and Community Development Banking. He was passionate about economic development and education for the underprivileged. Bob was an active member of Living Word Church, loved gardening and was an amateur arborist.

Bob is survived by his wife, Mary, also of Rustburg, his daughter, Marla, of Blacksburg; and son Gregory (Tierney) of Charlottesville. He has three grandchildren, Naia, Cole and Jude and had the privilege in later life of being personally engaged with them.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Living Word Scholarship Program.

A funeral service will be conducted 12pm, Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Living Word Church with Pastor James Camm officiating. His remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery with full Military Honors at a later date.
