Mary Ellen Wensing

Mary Ellen Wensing, age 83, of NE Mpls. Born to Edward Golden and Bessie Lee on June 27, 1929 in Crosby, MN. Died December 29, 2012.

She graduated from C-I High School as valedictorian in 1947. Mary Ellen waitressed summers at Ruttger's Bay Lake Resort, while attending Hamline University where she earned her teaching degree. She first taught at Huntley, MN until moving to NE Minneapolis. Married John in 1952. Worked at Honeywell.

She taught in the Minneapolis Public Schools from 1962-1985 as a reserve teacher at various Minneapolis schools including Northeast Jr. High and Edison Sr. High, where her own children attended. She also taught religious release and bible school.


In addition to raising her family, she was very active in Trinity United Methodist Church, Campfire, enjoyed summers at the cabin on the Prairie River in McGregor, Minnesota and she was a travel park activity leader at her winter home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Survived by children: Jeanne Ellingson, Laurie (Tom) Pierner and John Todd Wensing; grand-children: Nicholas and Clinton Bailey, Lindsay (Ben) Winterfeld, Kari Jensen; great-grandchildren: Emma and Tyson, sister-in-law, Shirley (Gene) Krhin, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mary Ellen (Punky), was a loving aunt, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She especially enjoyed singing in the church choir and, above all, her family and friends. In 2010 she moved to Brainerd and resided at Good Samaritan, Woodland. There she met so many wonderful friends. She was a member of Park UMC and sang in the Sanctuary choir directed by her niece, Donna Dahl.

Memorial Service will be held 11:00am Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Park United Methodist Church in Brainerd, (218) 829-4116, with visitation one hour prior to the service at church.

Private interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
