Raymond Francis Barnes

Raymond Francis Barnes, 94, of Chatham, IL, passed away at his residence, with his family by his side on December 19, 2012. He was born August 25, 1918 in Auburn, the son of Charles and Audrey Endemon Barnes. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Charles and Edgar.

Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife of 72 years, Virginia Alvena Whitney Barnes; children, Donna (Lyle) Behl and Frank (Joanne) Barnes of Rochester; grandchildren, Matt Behl of Rochester, Suzanne (Brian) Daugherty of Rochester, Leigh Ann (Otto) Rentschler of Dawson, Charlie Barnes (fiancée Heather Brant) of Springfield; and eight great grandchildren.

It was a short walk from Raymond’s childhood home to the Cherry Grove School, near Irwin Park, south of Chatham. Raymond and Virginia married September 14, 1940, and lived most of their lives in Chatham. As a member of the Chatham United Methodist Church, Raymond was active in the Men’s Group. He served as a volunteer firefighter with the Chatham Fire Protection District (CFPD) and the Chatham community for 28 years from May 1950 until September 1978. Mr. Barnes was an avid bowler at the Chatham Bowl and Auburn bowling alley. Raymond worked for 45 years as a diesel mechanic for Illinois Transit Lines, which later became Crown Transit Lines.

Visitation: Friday, December 21, from 4-7PM, at Staab Polk Memorial Home, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham. At 4:30PM, the CFPD will honor Raymond with a walk- through to pay their respects.

Services: The family will greet friends at Chatham United Methodist Church, 104 W. Chestnut, from 9AM until the time of services at 10AM, Saturday, December 22, with Rev. Sara Isbell officiating. The Chatham Fire Department will conduct the Bell Ceremony and present a flag, for their firefighter colleague. Burial follows at Old Chatham Cemetery.
