James Thomas “Tom” McLane, Chinchilla, died Monday evening, surrounded by his loving family, at the Gino Merli Veteran Center in Scranton. He was preceded in death by his wife Joan McHale McLane, who died on October 4, 1984 and his longtime companion Margaret Travis who died in 2008.
Born in Scranton he was the son of the late James Leo and Beatrice Woodyatt McLane. Prior to his retirement, he served as Postmaster in Fleetville. Tom was a proud Navy veteran who served as a Seabee during World War II. He was a life member and Past Commander of the VFW Post 7069 in Clarks Summit, serving as VFW District Commander, All State Commander and All American Post Commander. He was also a member of the American Legion. Tom was a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of the Snows Church and a life member of the Chinchilla Hose Company. For many years he coached both Abington Little League and Astros Football.
Surviving are four sons Tom, Chinchilla, Mike and his wife Susan, S. Abington Township, Mark and his wife Susan, Metuchen, NJ, Paul and his wife Janice, Scranton; and four daughters, Kathy Mrykalo and her husband Jack, S. Abington Township, Mary Ellen McLane, Springfield, NJ, Ann Sharlow and her husband Bill, Westfield NJ, and Joan McLane, Los Angeles, CA; three sisters, Shirley Winters, Old Forge, Loretta Gower, Scranton, and Nancy Modzelewski, Scranton; fifteen grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Herman Ross Jr.; two sisters, Beatrice Malloy and Eleanor Burlingame.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Gino Merli Veteran Center for the care and compassion shown to Tom during his stay there.
The Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday at 10 p.m. from Our Lady of the Snows Church, Clarks Summit interment to follow in Shady Lane Cemetery. Friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit.
