Harvey F. Schmidt

U.S. VeteranHarvey F. Schmidt of West Bend died on Sunday, October 28, 2012 at the Samaritan Health Center at the age of 93 years. He was born on January 25, 1919 in St. Michael’s to the late John and Margaret (nee Sommers) Schmidt.

As a young child, the family moved to West Bend. He attended Holy Angels Grade School, graduating from West Bend High School in 1937. He then attended the former Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary of Science and became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in 1940.

During World War II, he served with the United States Navy as a corpsman. Following his discharge, he returned to West Bend and was the co-operator of the Schmidt Funeral Home and Schmidt Floor Covering.

In 1953, he started working for Mayer-Hughes Company in Milwaukee as a floor covering estimator. He then managed the Bay View Linoleum Company for a number of years.

On June 4, 1955, he was united in marriage to Mavis M. (nee Krahn) Olson at Zion Lutheran Church in Milwaukee.

In 1957, they settled in West Bend. Together they operated the Candlwick Lounge in Hartford for a short time. Later, they co-owned the Schmidtselhaus in downtown West Bend. After they sold the business, he tended bar at the 5 D’s and The Fireside in Allenton. For many years, he volunteered and worked for the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

Being an avid tennis player, he earned various awards throughout the years, dating back to his high school years. He also was a faithful Brewers fan, attending, listening to or watching as many games as he could. He also loved animals, including his dogs, Heidi, Snuggles and Penny, and his cat Babe.

He was a member of the West Bend Lodge 1398 Loyal Order Of Moose, the West Bend Noon Kiwanis and a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as an usher.

Survivors include his wife Mavis; 3 children Kathleen (Gary) Gooding, Harvey J. Schmidt, and Eileen Siska; 3 step-children Karen Bell, Thomas Olson and Bryan Olson; 6 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; 3 step-great-great-grandchildren; 4 sisters-in-law Catherine Schmidt, Ruby Bever, Marilyn (Richard) Backhaus and Virginia “Tootsie” Simpson; other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters Lorraine Bohn and Viola Unser, 1 brother Leander Schmidt and 1 step-granddaughter Barbara Ann.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 1 at 4:30 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend with Rev. David Schoob officiating. The family will greet relatvies and friends during a period of visitation at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 until 4:15 p.m.

The family has requested memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Washington County Humane Society.
