Jex Ashley Backstrom

Born: June 14, 1937
Died: July 28, 2012

Jex Backstrom passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 28th in Redding, CA. He is survived by his wonderful wife, Kay Meredith Backstrom, his sons Andrew (Patti) Backstrom of Reno, NV and Scott (Alison) Backstrom of Redding, CA , his brother Ronald Backstrom, his five grandchildren, Makenna, Brett, Reed, Tyler, and Veronica, and many other close family members and friends . He is predeceased by his loving and devoted wife of 44 years - Norma (Pettersen) Backstrom, sisters Deana Hooper and Barbara Robinson, and parents Jack Backstrom and Agnes (Ross) Backstrom.

Jex was born and raised in Oakland, CA. Shortly after graduation from high school, he moved to Eureka, CA where he met and married his first wife, Norma. In the early 1960's they moved to San Jose, CA for work and to raise their sons, Andy and Scott. Jex enjoyed a very successful 37+ year career as a Journeyman carpenter and Construction Manager, specializing in large, commercial building development and construction in the South and East Bay Area California markets. He was a master craftsman in the pure sense, which included painting, woodcarving, structural drawing, and furniture, pottery, and wood model design and build. Jex willingly volunteered his craftsman talents to family, friends, and community and was often referred to as "the man who could fix or build anything." In his child rearing years, Jex also enjoyed hunting, dirt bike riding, water skiing, coaching baseball, and building a family cabin at Ruth Lake, Ca. In 1984, the family moved to Pleasanton, CA. Upon retirement in 1998, Jex and Norma moved to Redding, Ca, where they were involved in the New Comers Group, among others. Jex was an active member of the local chapter of Sons in Retirement and Redding Elks Lodge 1073. In the latter years, Jex spent his time golfing, fishing, woodworking, and spending time with his wife Kay and their many dear friends. Jex will be greatly missed and will live on in our hearts.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, August 6th at the Redding Elks Lodge 1073 located at 250 Elk Drive, Redding, CA.
