Frances E. Alessio, 87, of Pompton Lakes, formerly of West Paterson and Nutley, died Monday, December 12, 2011.
Born in Queens, NY, Frances was the daughter of Philip and Margaret Fortunato. Marrying Gene Alessio, the couple settled in Nutley, where they raised two children.
During WWII, Frances earned a technical drawing certificate from the Pratt Institute in NYC. She later worked as an Administrator for Rutger's University in Newark while earning her B.A. and taking Master's Degree credits. After leaving Rutgers, she worked as a Teacher for several schools within the Paterson Diocese, spending the last 12 years of her career at St. George's Catholic School in Paterson. She retired at age 79.
A talented artist, Frances was active in several local art groups. She excelled in painting and sculpture, and won several awards for her creations. In addition, she was a phenomenal cook. Family and friends were often gathered at her home to enjoy her wonderful meals.
Frances was active with St. Mary's Church in Pompton Lakes since moving there eight years ago, and formerly was active with St. Mary's Parish in Nutley for more than 30 years.
She is lovingly survived by her son, Michael Alessio and her daughter, Gerri Alessio. She was predeceased by her husband, Gene, and her brother, Patrick Fortunato.
A funeral Mass will be held 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's RC Church, Pompton Lakes. Interment will follow at East Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clifton. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 7-9 pm and Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains.
