Violet Doris (Vickey) Gallant, formerly of Beverly, MA, widow of the late Leo J. Gallant, died Wednesday at The Hospice of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, SC. She was 86.
Mrs. Gallant was born in Cleveland, OH, on Dec. 28, 1924, to Andrew and Mary (Kovaks) Mokren. After graduating from high school at the start of WWII, she worked in a bomber factory, then joined the Women’s Army Corp (WACs). It was while she was stationed at Fort Butner, NC, that she met another soldier, Leo, whom she wed in 1946.
After the war ended, the couple moved to Leo’s hometown of Salem, MA, where she gave birth to two childen, Sharen and Michael. The family then moved to Beverly, MA, where she worked as a LPN before establishing a successful Stanley Home Products franchise. Mrs. Gallant later joined the administrative staff of the Northshore Shopping Center in Peabody, MA, working her way up to Marketing Director. In that role, she was highly visible in the community, coordinating fashion shows and mall events, organizing celebrity appearances, and managing the mall’s advertising and public service activities. One of her signature events was the annual “Santa’s Village,” featuring animated characters which she took great pride in personally cleaning and outfitting every year.
After her retirement in 1989 and the death of her husband in 1999, Mrs. Gallant moved to Johns Island, SC, to be closer to family.
Mrs. Gallant is survived by her daughter, Sharen Kardon, of Seabrook Island, SC; her son, Michael Gallant, of Amherst, MA; two granddaughters, Heather Abbott of Fort Thomas, KY, and Rebecca Gallant of Kansas City, MO; one great-granddaughter, Josephine Mitchell of Kansas City, MO; one great-grandson, Conner Abbott, of Fort Thomas, KY; and her brother, David Mokren, of Frazier Park, CA.
Her funeral will be held on Monday, January 17, 2011 at 8:15 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 9:00 A.M. in St. James Church, 161 Federal St., Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. in the funeral home. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery will be private.
