Bonham- Sylvia Jo Jestis Barker Brent, age 77 after a months-long battle with cancer fought with courage, humor and legendary stubbornness, passed away in her home on Friday, November 26, surrounded by a host of deeply devoted family. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, November 30 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham. Pastor Mark Parkerson and Rev. Dee Morton will officiate the service with interment following at Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas at 3:00pm

Sylvia was born on April 14, 1933 in Ladonia, TX to parents C.T. Jestis and Pauline Mouer. She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands: first, John Barker (Papaw) (d. July 4, 1981), with whom she had four children, Pam, Sharon, Rick and Carol; and second, George Brent (Papa) (d. September 7, 2007).

She was a resident of Bonham for many years, and a faithful member of Ector United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed teaching children’s Sunday school and vacation Bible school.

She is survived by children, Pam Jackson, Sharon and Mark Parkerson, Rick and Sarah Barker, Carol and Pat Norris; grandchildren, Nicole and Steven Gordon, Amy Stephens, Matthew and Rebekah Parkerson, James and Heather Parkerson, Sean Barker, Kelley Barker, Amber and Brandon Barnes, Ashley Norris, John Patrick Norris; great-grandchildren, Austin Gordon, Brooke Gordon, and “one on the way”; as well as one brother, Troy Jestis.

Mamaw was affectionately known to her family as a loving yet formidable presence, regarded as the matriarch, boss, and queen of all she surveyed. She would like everyone to know she is now truly “just fine.”

Pallbearers will be Charlie Jestis, Bennie Jestis, Chuck Jestis, Mike Brent, Larry Barker, Terry Barker, and Chris Roszak.

Family visitation will be held at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham on Monday, November 29, 2010 from 6-8 P.M.
