Gretna......Melba Fitzgerald Barbour, age 65 of 4389 Blue Ridge Drive, Gretna went home to be reunited with her ancestors and maker Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at her home surrounded by her family. Melba was born May 2, 1945 in Pittsylvania County and was the daughter of the late George Thomas Fitzgerald and Nannie Ella Rowland Fitzgerald. She was predeceased by her husband, Larry “Pete” Barbour, and a daughter, Penny Barbour Wright. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gretna Branch. She was formerly employed by Sarah Lee Knitting of Gretna, and was a retired health care provider. Melba was the kind of person who never met a stranger and no matter where she was could always find someone to talk to. She had a twinkle in her eye, rosy cheeks, and a subtle wit just like her father. She had a passion for reading and dancing, and was a regular attendee of the New London Ruritan Club. She is survived by a daughter, Patty Dix and her husband, Jimmy of the residence, a son Michael Barbour and partner David Clay of Roanoke, a granddaughter, Brittany Dix of the residence; two grandsons, Zachary Wright of Amherst, and Aaron Dix of Lynchburg; two sisters, Patsy Queen and husband Clyde of Hurt, and Frances Shelhorse and husband, Barney of Gretna. Melba is also survived by many dear friends, including Josephine Keen, Bonnie Hart, Lois Wheeler, Candy Payne, Dustin Wood, and her beloved dog Frisky. Also a special thank you to Dr. Van Dyke and everyone at Centra Hospice. Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the Colbert-Moran Chapel by President J. William Fowler . Burial will follow in Gretna Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence. Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna is in charge of arrangements.
