John G Mitchell

Loving husband, father, and grandfather

Mr. John G. ”Jack” Mitchell, 81, of 75 Ransom Hall Road, died Friday February 1, 2013 at his residence in the presence of his loving family. He was the husband of Joanne (Mazzalupo) Mitchell.

John was born in Waterbury, CT on May 20, 1931, son of the late John G. Mitchell Sr. and the late Lea (Maccione) Mitchell Leach Couture. He served in the US Navy. He graduated from Leavenworth High School and attended Waterbury State Technical College and Mattatuck Community College. He worked as an Engineer for Ensign-Bickford Industries for fourteen years retiring in 1993. Prior to Ensign-Bickford he worked for Benrus and Hayden Switch. Up until the time of his illness, he enjoyed golf, working in his yard on his favorite Wheelhorse Tractor, and spending time with his grandchildren. True to his nickname, he was a Jack-of-all trades, completing many home projects. An avid reader, he enjoyed old world literature and several daily newspapers. In his later years he cruised to several countries with his wife Joanne, the light of his life and best friend by his side. Always happy-go-lucky, he started each day with a smile on his face and ended it with a whistle on his lips. He was a fan of UCONN Huskies women’s basketball.

His family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of VITAS for the care and comfort given to Jack in his last days. Also heartfelt thanks to the rehab staff of Cheshire House for the excellent care and kindness during his stays.

Besides his wife of fifty-three years he leaves; three daughters, Lynn Mitchell of Southington, Lisa Oliveira and her husband Michael of Wolcott, and Lori Merchant and her husband David of Colchester, CT; three grandchildren, Justin Oliveira of Wolcott and twins, Morgan and Evan Merchant of Colchester; a brother-in-law Robert Mazzalupo of West Borough, MA; an uncle Martin Maccione of Oakville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
