Willis Wendell "Dell" Sykes
(April 9, 1950 - October 29, 2011)
Mr. Willis Sykes, age 61 of Roanoke Rapids, NC, departed this life on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Woodhaven Nursing Home, Enfield, NC.
Willis, the oldest of three children of Willie R. Sykes and the late Cleopatra Jones Sykes, was born April 9, 1950 in Halifax County, NC.
At an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, was baptized and united with Simmons Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
He graduated from John Armstrong Chaloner High School with the Class of 1968. After graduation, he relocated to Brooklyn, NY where he worked at Ranger Tire Company, Bay Shore, NY and remained there nearly 30 years before returning back to North Carolina.
"Dell", as he was affectionately called, was a humble, kind and loving person who enjoyed working and in his leisure time, he enjoyed watching TV, especially football, with his favorite team being the New York Jets. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Treasured memories will remain with his son: Willie "Pnut" Price of Roanoke Rapids, NC; two daughters: LaShonte Price of Littleton, NC and Vicky Arrington of Raleigh, NC; his only grandson who was the apple of his eye: Tayshun Price; his father: Willie R. Sykes of the home; his only brother: Alton Sykes of the home; five nieces: Vanessa Mills (Freeman) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Valerie Sykes (Mustafaa) of Ithaca, NY, Tonya Pittman (Michael) of Tarboro, NC, Nakia Squire of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Alberta Squire of Winston-Salem, NC; several great-nieces; one uncle: Dea. Otis Jones of Roanoke Rapids, NC; three aunts: Mattie Whitaker of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Pecolia Fitts and Daisy Johnson of Brooklyn, NY; a host of cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Homegoing Services will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 2:00 PM from the sanctuary of Simmons Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Roanoke Rapids, NC with the Pastor, Rev. Melvin A. Davis presiding and Rev. Louis "Pete" Jones delivering the eulogy.
Interment will follow in the Shearins Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids, NC.
