Verner E. Johnson
(November 16, 1915 - April 18, 2007)
Lifelong Newberry resident, Verner E. Johnson, 91, died Wednesday evening April 18, 2007 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.
Born November 16, 1915 in Newberry, son of the late John & Edith Johnson, Verner was a 1935 graduate of Newberry High School. A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Air Force as a pilot and instructor until his honorable discharge on September 12, 1946 attaining the rank of Captain. Following his discharge, Verner returned to Newberry and held various employments in the field of accounting and owned and operated the Norge Laundromat until his retirement.
Verner was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, a member of the Newberry Lions Club, member and past commander of American Legion Post #74, former member of V.F.W. Post #8372, volunteer for Boy Scout Troop #124, founding member of the Tahquamenon Outboard Association and the Big Valley Ski Area. Verner enjoyed aircraft flying, crosscountry and downhill skiing, ice skating and bicycling, serving as a touring guide for the Michigan Bicycle Association.
Besides his parents, Verner is preceded in death by his son Brian, two grandchildren and eight siblings.
Survivors include his children Sherry Calhoun of Newberry, Yvonne Ballard of Saginaw, Sandra (Richard) Kirk of Alpharetta, GA, Victor (Lisa) Johnson of Saginaw, Joanna (Darrell) Nantell and Eric Johnson all of Newberry; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sister Margaret (Jerry) Lustila of Melvindale.
Funeral services will be held Monday April 23, 2007 at 11:00 am at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newberry with Pastor LaVonne Stephenson officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry. Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home on Sunday April 22nd from 4-6 pm and also at the church on Monday April 23rd from 10:00 am until time of services.
