Judith M. “Judy” (Collins) Moran, age 68, retired Salem District Court Chief Probation Officer, age 68, loving wife of Thomas P. Moran died Friday, November 26, 2010 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House.

Born in Taunton, MA the daughter of the late Retired, MA State Police Capt John W. Collins and Margaret E. (Bradley) Collins, her family moved to Topsfield in 1947 and settled in Salem in 1957. A graduate of St Mary’s High School in Beverly, Class of 1960, Mrs. Moran received her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Suffolk University.

For many years she was employed by the Commonwealth of MA in Salem District Court retiring as Chief Probation Officer in 2005. Judy was very active in helping those on probation and is credited with initiating the “Fatherhood for Probationers” program helping those on probation integrate with their families. Her commitment to community was also seen in her passion to help other by serving on the Board of Directors of the Children’s Law Center in Lynn, Catholic Charities, North Shore Children’s Hospital and the Salem Mission.

In addition to her husband, Judy is survived by three brothers and two sisters, John B and his wife Martha Collins of Newburyport, Thomas Collins of Boston, Joseph F. Collins and his wife Elizabeth of Topsfield, Mary Dupont and her husband Wayne of Newburyport and Katherine Collins of Medford; five nieces and nephews, Susan Dwyer and Elizabeth Murray both of Reading , Peter J. Collins of Wakefield, John W. and Martin Q Collins both of Topsfield; eight great nieces and nephews and a dear friend Hugh Galligan of Salem.

Her Funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 9:00 AM from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Anne Church, 292 Jefferson Ave, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Tues from 4PM to 8PM in the Murphy Funeral Home. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
