Adele P. Berkes

Adele P. Berkes, (Grandma Del, Meema) 80, of DeKalb, Ill passed away on April 29, 2010 at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb. She was born on October 29, 1929 in DeKalb the daughter of John and Bessie (Tolishitis) Matekaitis. Adele married James P. Berkes on October 30, 1948 at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb.

In addition to raising a family of six children, she had a varied entrepreneurial career that touched many people. Adele was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a Past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a runner up of the Mrs. Illinois Pageant , an avid reader and loved to play bingo. Adele always had room at her table for hungry guests and was mother to many.

She is survived by her five children, Susan (Joseph) Eby of Springfield, Ill., Tommy Berkes of Santa Fe, N.M., James (Suzanne) Berkes of Danville, Ill., Lori (Layne) Berkes-Nelson of Loves Park, Ill. and Sharon (Karl) Priggee of Cottonwood, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren, Aaron (Kerry) Gersonde, Margaret Eby, Jacob (Esther) and Danielle (Shawn) Berkes, Nick and Tom Gurley, Sam (Brooke Nelson), Paul, Jay and Celia Berkes, Maddie and Forrest Nelson and Alexandria and James Priggee; five great grandchildren, Juna, Zebedee, Nathan, Seth and Anjamora; brother, Walter Matekaitis; son-in-law, Rick Gurley; and many cherished relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James; her daughter, Joanne; two infant daughters at birth, Rosemary and Mary Jo; brother, Elmer “Lefty” Matekaitis; and her parents.

Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 3, 2010 at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb with Father Steve Knox officiating. Interment of cremated remains will follow immediately at St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. on Monday. Cremation has taken place at the Anderson Funeral Home Crematory.
