James E. Baum

U.S. Veteran

Davis-Miller Funeral Home, Lincoln

James Edward Baum, 89, died at his home in Lincoln on April 5.

He was born on November 17, 1920, the son of James Van Reed Baum and Dena Munton Baum. He grew up on his parents’ farm in Bond County, Illinois, and served in the Army from 1942 to 1946, seeing duty in the South Pacific. On June 12, 1943, he was married to Gretchen Elaine Gillingham of Evanston, Illinois.

They farmed for several years in Bond County, then he began a successful career in the industrial air conditioning and heating business, serving in management positions for several manufacturers over a thirty-year career in Kansas City, Indianapolis, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City. He retired in 1985 as Vice President of Marketing for SMB Corporation in Oklahoma City, at which point they moved to the Lincoln area to be nearer to their grandchildren. They spent many happy years enjoying the natural beauty of the area and being with friends and family here. They became active members of the First Baptist Church of Lincoln and were involved in many community activities.

Last June, Jim and Gretchen celebrated their 66th year of marriage. She was always at the center of his life, and survives him. He is also survived by a son, Reed Baum of Breese, Illinois; two daughters and their husbands, Mike and Vicki Grove of Lincoln and Jim and Kathy Reynolds of Portland, Oregon; one grandson, Michael Grove of Bloomington, Indiana; one granddaughter and one great-grandchild, Jennifer Grove of Spencer, Indiana, and her son, Silvan Foster. James was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Maxine Baum Erkiletian.

Funeral Services will be held at the Davis-Miller Funeral Home in Lincoln at 2:00PM Thursday with visitation at 1:00. James will be buried in McKendree Chapel Cemetery in Bond County, Illinois on Friday, April 9, 2010, at 1:00 PM. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Lincoln in care of the Davis-Miller Funeral Home, Lincoln, MO.
