Funeral services will be held Monday, November 2, 2009 at a 1:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Evangeline Memorial Gardens Chapel in Carencro for Jake Benoit, age 91, who passed away Friday, October 30, 2009, 6:00 a.m. at his residence in Sunset.

Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Lafayette. The Rev. Henry J. Broussard, pastor of St. John Berchman Catholic Church, will officiate at the services assisted by Deacon Samuel Henry and Darrell Burleigh of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Readers will be Shawn Benoit and Angie Benoit. Gift bearers will be Todd Benoit, Michelle Benoit and Alisha Babineaux.

Mr. Benoit was a native and lifelong resident of Sunset. He retired in 1980, manager and bookkeeper for Sunset Farmer’s Gin Feed and Seed with thirty years of service, having previously been a farmer. His love and sport was raising and training gaming roosters and horse racing. Mr. Benoit was a member of Drainage District No. 1 of Ward 2 of St. Landry Parish. Serving actively from its creation in 1981 until his passing. “His knowledge of the areas drainage needs and property owners will be greatly missed,” said Chairman, A.F. Pete Olivier. Mr. Benoit was a parishioner of St. John Berchman Catholic Church in Cankton.

Survivors include his wife of seventy one years, the former Gladys Hebert Benoit of Sunset; one son, Ray "Mac" Benoit and his wife, Betsy, of Lafayette; five grandchildren, Michelle Benoit, Todd Benoit, Shawn Benoit, Angie Benoit and Alisha Babineaux; three great grandchildren, Gage Artigue, Gavin Babineaux and Nikki Thibodeaux; three step grandchildren, Nicholas Thibodeaux, Katie Thibodeaux and Allison Thibodeaux; four brothers, Eldon "Black" Benoit and his wife, Theresa, of Church Point, Ellis Benoit of Lafayette; Hershel Benoit and his wife, Judy, of Bristol and Kelly Benoit of Scott; and three sisters, Eldine B. Lantier of Duson, Lucy B. Whitley, and Ella Mae B. Dugas both of Lafayette.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Benoit and the former Anna Louise Cropper both natives of Bristol; two brothers, Cleve Benoit and Leland "Bob" Benoit; and one sister, Genevieve B. Leger.

A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home by Darrell Burleigh.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Sunday and will continue from 8:00 a.m. until service time on Monday.

Pallbearers will be Todd Benoit, Shawn Benoit, Ricky Benoit, Nicholas Thibodeaux, Pete Olivier and Matt Babineaux. Honorary pallbearers will be Gage Artigue, Gavin Babineaux and Mackie Knott.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the family and friends who helped and supported the family throughout his illness, especially Pete Olivier and Mackie Knott; members and staff of Hospice of Acadiana, especially Margaret Gray, Amy Babineaux Green, Dona Faulkinberry, and Carol Jones with Mel’s Heart of Gold.
