STAUNTON --
Catherine “Cacky” Virginia (Demastus) Bowers, 91, of 1900 Hillsmere Lane, and widow of Isaac Philander "Ike" Bowers, died on Sunday morning, October 25, 2009 at Augusta Health in Fishersville.
Born March 2, 1918 in Augusta County, Catherine was the daughter of the late Robert and Dora (Doome) Demastus. Several days after her birth, following the death of her mother, she was brought to the home of her grandmother, Sarah “Sally” Elizabeth Doome and Aunt Pearl (Doome) Roadcap who raised her. She resided at 1744 West Beverley Street until her marriage in 1951. When her aunt’s health began to fail, she and her husband moved back to the West Beverley residence where she remained until her own health began to fail.
Catherine was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. After her retirement from DuPont, she enjoyed traveling, bingo, and being a part of the Ever Young Singers.
The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by those previously mentioned, as well as her sister, Mary Elizabeth (Demastus) Roadcap and niece, Connie Roadcap Graham.
Catherine is survived by a special cousin, Rebecca “Becky” (Roadcap) Showker of Staunton, and her children, Nina (Showker) Kaminsky of Ohio, Dana (Showker) Simmons of Mt. Solon, Caye Showker of Tennessee and Steven Showker of Staunton, in addition to a niece, Faith (Roadcap) Long of Bridgewater.
There will be no formal visitation.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at Augusta Memorial Park by the Rev. Wade Munford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 2000 Shutterlee Mill Road, Staunton, VA 24401.
