On Wednesday, October 22, 2009, Dominican Sister of Peace Rosemary Yonkers, OP, died at Regina Health Center, Richfield, OH. She was born in Opatske, Czechoslovakia, on October 27, 1911, to Andrew and Anna Seliga Yonkers. She entered the Novitiate of the former Our Lady of the Elms Dominican congregation, Akron, OH, in 1943 and made her Profession of Vows in 1945. Sr. Rosemary earned a BSE from St. John College, Cleveland, OH, and an MS in education from Kent State University. She ministered as a teacher from 1945 to 1977 in Ohio at SS. Peter and Paul School, Doylestown; St Augustine, Barberton; St. Joseph, Alliance; Immaculate Conception, Ravenna; Our Lady of the Elms, Akron; St. Matthew, Akron; and St. Bernard, Akron. From 1977 to 1989, Sr. Rosemary ministered in pastoral care at Timken Mercy Hospital in Canton and Barberton Citizens Hospital in Barberton. In her later years, she moved the motherhouse at the Elms and remained active in pastoral ministry at nearby Manor Care and Rockynol Nursing Homes. In 1994, Sr. Rosemary retired to Manor Care and in 2005 moved to Regina Health Center. Sr. Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Mary Anne. Reception of the Body will take place at the Akron Motherhouse, 1230 W. Market St, Akron, on Monday, October 26, 3-6pm, with the wake at 4pm in the motherhouse chapel.
