June 3, 1934 – October 20, 2009

South Bend – Barbara Rose Was, 75, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 6:55am in Fountainview Place, Mishawaka.

Barbara was born on June 3, 1934 in South Bend to the late Aloysius and Mary (Mindykowski) Was. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Michael Was.

She is survived by her three sisters, Mary Ann (Richard) Wegner of Mishawaka, Patricia (Dan) Thompson of Three Rivers, MI, and Sally (Bob) Milewski of Granger; her brother, Thomas Was of Mishawaka; many nieces and nephews, Debbie Burch of South Bend, Paul Wegner of South Bend, Rick Wegner of Cassopolis, MI, Mary Kay Willingham of Mishawaka, John Wegner of Mishawaka, Dan Thompson, Jr. of South Bend, Sue Badowski of Mishawaka, Amy Yoste of Dallas, TX, and Tracy Milewski-Vida of Reading, PA; six great-nephews; five great-nieces; six step-grand-nieces and nephews; Aunt Betty (Dan) Dzierla of Mishawaka; dear and special friend, Jack Piechowicz of South Bend; and by many loving cousins.

Barbara was for many years a member of the Sisters of Holy Cross Congregation teaching at parochial schools in Evergreen Park, IL, Flint, MI, and St. Joseph grade school, South Bend. After leaving the Congregation she taught at St. John the Baptist, South Bend, IN where she retired in 1999. She received her Bachelors degree from St. Mary’s College, South Bend and her Masters degree from Ball State University. She enjoyed dancing, especially polkas, reading, walking, shopping, family gatherings, and trips with Travel Lovers. Barbara was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Catholic Church, and she enjoyed taking communion to shut-ins. Barbara was also an avid Notre Dame fan, and enjoyed pontoon rides on Corey Lake.

Visitation will be from 2:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday, October 22, 2009 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 23, 2009 at 1:00pm in St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Catholic Church by her cousin Fr. Gene-Laurian Wegner, OFM and concelebrated by Fr. Michael Matthews, CSC. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff members at St. Joseph Hospital Oncology, The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, and Fountainview Nursing Home for their loving and attentive care. .
