Charles Gilbert Herrin, Sr.

U.S. Veteran Charles Gilbert Herrin, Sr. age 94, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away at his home Tuesday morning, October 6, 2009. He was a life long Sumner County resident and a retired Conductor/Brakeman for the Santa Fe Railroad.

Charles Gilbert Herrin was born on January 16, 1915 at Caldwell, KS to Clifford O. Herrin and Mary Alice (Plaugher) Herrin. He graduated from Caldwell High School with the Class of 1933.

He served in the United State Army during WWII with the 713th RR Operating Battalion.

He married Wanda Lee Coon on November 3, 1946 in Clovis, New Mexico.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, VFW, American Legion, UTU, and NARVRE, Inc. He enjoyed cooking, crossword puzzles, and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Glenn Herrin; sister, Monell Horseman; and son-in-law, Jim Ricketts.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wanda Herrin of Wellington, KS; one son Charles G. “Chuck” Herrin, Jr. of Effingham, IL; two daughters, Linda Ricketts and Pat Gleason both of Wellington, KS; five grandchildren, Jimmy Ricketts of Wellington, KS, Rene’ Bender of Rosalia, KS, Trampas Gleason of Wellington, KS, Christi Keller of Wichita, KS, and Katie Trunnell of Cedar Falls, IA; and eight great grandchildren, Ashley and Shona Bender, Grant and Hunter Sandell, Ava and Chase Keller, Jordan Walton and Isabel Gleason.

Funeral Services will be held at the First Christian Church on Friday, October 9, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. Pastor Sallie Shore will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Sumner Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, October 8, 2009 from 1:00 – 9:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 5:30 – 7:30 P.M.

Memorials have been established with the Avenue of Flags and the First Christian Church in lieu of flowers. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
