Joyce Lee (Staples) Reedy, age 86, of Freeport, Illinois passed away on September 23, 2009 at Parkview Home in Freeport. She was born in Pittsburg, Oklahoma on June 1, 1923, daughter of Pearl A. And Seaf Staples. Her family moved to Illinois in 1933. She graduated from Canton Illinois High School in 1941. She earned her B.S. degree from Western Illinois University in 1945 where she was a charter member of Beta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority and was president in her junior year. On December 24, 1946 she and Lyle J. Reedy were married in Canton, IL. She is survived by her husband, Lyle, one son, DR. Chad (Ann) Reedy, and one granddaughter, Ali Reedy. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Louvene Turner. Her teaching experience covered 30 years in Freeport and Peoria Heights, IL. She began her teaching career at Freeport Senior High, then moved to Peoria, where she taught 7th and 8th grade at Peoria Heights. She returned to Freeport in 1950 and resumed her teaching at the Cedarville Elementary School, Harlem and Lincoln-Douglas Elementary Schools. She established the Elementary Library in Freeport District 145. She finished her professional teaching at Freeport Senior High serving as head of the English Department. Her memberships included: Deacon and Elder of Second Presbyterian Church; PEO, Chapter IY; organizer and founding president Of American Association of University Women in Freeport; member of 20th Century Book Club; life member of Alpha Sigma Alpha and retired member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She enjoyed her every opportunity to be with family and travel took her to Europe, Asia, Canada, Mexico Texas, and Hawaii. She enjoyed the companionship of friends by playing bridge and golf. She was an avid reader, loved long walks with her neighbors, and dancing at the Mercury Ball Room, Germania Club,and the Elks Lodge. Former students expressing their satisfaction and success in life as a result of her classes were some of the highest rewards in life. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Monday September 28, 2009 at Bethany United Church of Christ with Rev. Robert Sherman officiating. Visitation will be from 1-3 Sunday at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport; also Monday beginning at 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at the church.
