Funeral services were held at 10:30 AM on Saturday October 3, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Bancroft, Iowa with Pastor Jerry D. Miller. Burial was at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson, Iowa at 2:00PM.
Friends and family attended her visitation on Friday from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at Winter Funeral Home, 245 Harrison Street, Thompson and also 1 hour before the service at the church in Bancroft.
Shirley Hill, 79, of Thompson, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center, Iowa.

Shirley Ann Sommer, daughter of John and Evelyn (Mead) Sommer, was born June 22, 1930 in Niles, MI. She graduated in 1948 from high school in Dowagiac, MI. She graduated from Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music in 1953. Shirley then worked a year with Calvary Bible Church in Dowagiac, MI. She served as a missionary with Rural Home Missionary Association working in northern MI in VBS, school Bible clubs, and small Sunday Schools from 1954-1963.
On August 17, 1963 she married Robert Hill at Dowagiac, MI. The LORD blessed their union with three daughters and one son. Together they served a small country church near East Jordan, MI. They moved to Thompson, IA in 1973.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City, IA where she taught Sunday School, Junior Church, sang in the choir, played piano, and helped in AWANA.
Shirley moved to Swea City in 2005, and became a member of First Baptist Church in Bancroft. Then in 2007 she moved to Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.
As a teenager, Shirley realized that her parents’ salvation was not sufficient for her salvation, and she accepted the LORD as her personal Savior, and was later baptized.
Shirley is survived by daughter Vera Swanson and her husband Dennis, Rebecca, Glen, Anders, Julie, Susannah, Amanda, Daniel, Elijah, and Jeremiah of Swea City, IA; daughter Faith Paszkiewicz and her husband Paul, Joseph, Jonathan, Thomas, Naomi, Timothy, Nadia, and Joanna of Campbellsport, WI; daughter Hope Smith and her husband Roger, Jennifer, Benjamin, David, Abigail, and Melissa of Helena, MT; son John Hill and his wife Mary, Elizabeth, Victoria, and Josiah of Indianapolis, IN; sister Mary Passig and husband Howard of Niles,MI; brother Burl Sommer and wife Marylin of Glenallen, AK; brother Dick Sommer and wife Carol of East Jordan, MI; brother Dave Sommer and wife Ruth of Santa Cruz, Bolivia; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert; sister Eva Steere; and brother John (Jack) Sommer.
