Hazel C. Christensen, 89 passed away January 29, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Arlington, SD following a year long battle with cancer. Hazel Johnson was born February 4, 1919 near Erwin, SD to Oscar and Carrie (Henderson) Johnson. She was raised on the family farm with her six brothers and sisters. Hazel graduated from Bryant High School and attended General Beadle College in Madison. For a brief time, she worked as a housekeeper in Chicago and also as a store clerk at several Badger businesses. On August 1, 1945, she married Ralph Christensen of Badger. For sixty three years, they lived in Badger, farmed and ran the family business. In the early years of their marriage, Hazel ran the household and raised their two children, George and Janet, while Ralph traveled as a salesman for Owatonna Manufacturing.
In addition to being a loving and patient wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma, Hazel had many interests. She and Ralph spent 31 winters in Mesa, AZ where Hazel took part in many of the retirement community activities. She was a member of the Badger Legion Auxiliary, and was also active in square dancing. Hazel loved gardening, playing cards, doing puzzles and quilting. She will be greatly missed by all who know her.
Hazel is survived by her husband, Ralph, daughter, Janet Bjordahl, grandchildren, Carrie (Jeff) Churchill, Erik (Angela) Bjordahl, Todd (Renae) Christensen, Krista Bjordahl and Kurtis Christensen, great-grandchildren, Hannah and Molly Churchill, Bella and Kai Bjordahl and three siblings, Curtis Johnson, Wally Johnson and Margaret Legler.
She is preceded in death by her parents, son, George, son-in-law, Phil Bjordahl and her siblings, Lillian Carlson, Bernice Johnson and Clifford Johnson.
Memorial services for Mrs. Christensen will be 1:30 pm, Saturday, February 14, 2009 at the Badger Lutheran Church with Pastor Gene Peterson officiating, burial will be at a later date in the Badger City Cemetery. The Johnson-Henry Funeral Home of Arlington is in charge of arrangements.
