U.S. Veteran

Owen Lowry Riley Sr., 88, of Pine Mountain Valley, Georgia, died Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, Georgia.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Roosevelt Memorial Church in Pine Mtn Valley with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm in the church prior to the service.

Mr. Riley was born August 2, 1926 in Atlanta, Georgia, the son of Howard Letcher Riley and Pearl Ermine Gorman. He was self-employed as one of the first Consulting Foresters in the United States and was the oldest practicing forester in Georgia when he retired at the age of 86. He earned undergraduate and masters degrees in forestry at The University of Georgia in Athens. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII who served in occupied Japan after the war. He was an original and lifelong member of Roosevelt Memorial Church in Pine Mt. Valley where he was a deacon and led congregational singing for 30 years. The church dedicated a Prayer Garden to Riley and his wife Grace in 2012. He served as a member of the Harris County Board of Education for 18 years including a time as chairman. He was a passionate outdoorsman, hiker, gardener, traveler and lover of animals, the land and his family. He was one of the founders and designers of the Pine Mountain Trail. He and his wife Grace traveled together to all 50 of the United States and to 25 foreign countries.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Grace Stephens Riley of Pine Mtn Valley, GA; his daughter Lori Riley Day and her husband Stephen of Dacula, GA; his son Owen Lowry Riley Jr. and wife Beth of Greenville, SC; his son Gorman Stephens Riley of Pine Mtn Valley, GA; three grandchildren, Alexandra Day of Atlanta, GA, Olivia Day of Savannah, GA and Clara Riley of Greenville, SC; one brother Hugh Riley and his wife Pat of Pine Mtn Valley, GA ; four nephews Skeet and Lee Riley of Pine Mountain, GA; James MacFarlane of Pine Mtn Valley, GA, Howard Riley III of Orlando, FL; two nieces Kathy Riley Roe of Belton, S.C. and Patricia Vuittonet of Atlanta, Georgia.
