Richard Day

U.S. Veteran

Richard G. "Dick" Day passed away August 9, 2014. He was born December 4, 1931 in the Blue Springs Community of Covington County south of Opp to Earnest J. Day (1894-1978) and Irma O. McCallum Day (1905-1987).

In 1938 his father relocated the family to the Crossroads Community of Baldwin County, near Bay Minnette where he grew up. His father was a farmer and carpenter. After World War II the family relocated to the Green Bay Community south of Opp. Richard and his family were members of the New Hope Baptist Church.

In 1949 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was trained as a firefighter. He was stationed at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, and Fairchild AFB, Washington. In 1952 he was sent to Suwan Air Base, Korea and served there until the end of the war. In October of 1953 he returned to the U.S. and was stationed at Moody AFB, Ga.

On November 18, 1953 he married Sarah Luree Barnes (1931-2004) of the Enon Community of Covington County. In 1954 he was hired at Fort Rucker, Al as a firefighter. He had four children: Bobbie Lynne Day Jowers (1955), Melissa Faye Day Wilson (1960), Sandra Luree Day Jackson (1965), and Charles E. Day (1968).

He worked for the Ft. Rucker Fire Dept. form October 1958 until his retirement in December 1981 attaining the rank of asst. Fire Chief. He was loved and greatly respected by all those he worked with. He also served in the National Guard and Air Force Reserve for 38 years attaining the rank of Chief Master Sergeant retiring in 1989.

On April 7, 2005 he married Maxine Hutcheson. Richard and Maxine traveled extensively enjoying trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Disney World, Key West, Bahamas, Paris, Germany, Italy, Austria and Ireland. Even though Richard had a massive stroke 6 months after they married, he worked hard and did an amazing job of coming back to his former self. He and his beloved wife Maxine work out at the gym 3 days a week. He really did enjoy the good life. He was preceded in death by first wife, Sarah Luree Day, parents, brother, Lucious Eugene "Red" Day and sister, Irma Irene Cook.

Richard is survived by his wife, Maxine Hutcheson Day of Lockhart, 3 daughters, Bobbie Lynne Jowers and her husband Glenn of Opp, Melissa Wilson and her husband Frank of Montgomery, Sandra Jackson and her husband Michael of Opp, and son, Charles E. Day of Opp, step-daughters, Ren'ee Gamble and Reyona Yarbrough 3 grandchildren, Brent Alan Jowers, Callie Suzanne Jowers and Jon Jackson 3 step-grandchildren, Selena Chidester, Leah Gamble and Dilly Yarbrough 4 great grandchildren, Connor, Ashton, Aliyana and Parker 3 step- great grandchildren, Ryan, Abby and Malachi. He is also survived by host of friends, his golfing buddies, his church family at the First Presbyterian Church in Florala and his friends at the breakfast table at Hardee's. He was a wonderful husband, dad, grandfather and great grandfather.

Funeral services for Richard G. Day will be 11AM Tuesday August 12, 2014 from Evans Funeral Home with Bob Baxter and Bill Richoux officiating. Visitation will be from 9AM to service time. Interment will be at Peaceful Acres Cemetery in Opp.
