Cecile Rose Bourgeois Short, 95 , a former resident of Tel Road in Bennington and more recently of Rose Lane at Fillmore Pond died Monday July 28, 2014 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation following a brief illness.
She was born in Bennington, VT July 23, 1919. She was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Elise (Heppelle) Bourgeois. Cecile received her education in Bennington where she attended Sacred Heart School.
She married Harry L. Short in 1940.
In earlier years Cecile had been employed at the Union Carbide Corporation in Bennington from which she retired. Following her retirement she joined her husband in the family business, The Glass Shop in Manchester where she was the bookkeeper.
During the early years of marriage Cecile learned to hunt and fish alongside her husband. They decided to build a camp on Lake Champlain (Little Bennington) where they could teach their four children about the great outdoors. The family spent many a summer and winter day together enjoying this small piece of heaven. She enjoyed playing golf and had been a member of the Mount Anthony Country Club, Manchester Country Club and was the Club Champion at the Arlington Golf Course. She also enjoyed crafts, especially knitting and had knitted Afghans for all of her grandchildren. She also bowled and had traveled extensively throughout the United States with her husband in their camper. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church.
Survivors include her children, Jean Short of Bennington, Dianne Coonz of Sandwich, MA, and Bob Short and his wife Denise of Bennington. Her grandchildren, Stephen Woodward and his wife Carol of St. Albans, VT, Kurt Labanowski and his wife Amy of Ramsey, New Jersey, Laura McClure of Williston, VT, Jay Coonz of Sandwich, MA, Kari Tosca and her husband Jerry of Sandwich, MA, Jessica Laurent and her husband Mark of Virginia and Robert Short and his wife Ashley of North Bennington, VT. Nine great grandchildren, Nicklas, Jake, Kiley, Kaiden, Cody, Connor, Ashley, Emily and Adam; two brothers Joseph Bourgeois of Bennington, Donald Bourgeois of North Carolina, two sisters, Joan Dorman of Bennington and Marie “Mickey” Langevin of Bennington along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was pre-deceased by a daughter Patricia Woodward and seven brothers and sisters, Edward Bourgeois, Helen Lampron, Yvonne Brunett, Eleanor Cahill, Rachel Kinney, Doris Bourgeois and Claire Smith.
At Mrs. Short’s request there will be no calling hours or funeral services.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
