Joe L. Simmons

U.S. Veteran

Joe L. Simmons, 80, passed into eternal rest on July 19, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born September 8, 1933 in Lake Garfield, Florida to Luther and Estella Simmons.

After high school, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Air Force serving proudly for 13 years and earning numerous medals. He finally left the Air Force at the rank of E-5, and he ended his military career in San Antonio, Texas, where he and his family remained and called home. Joe was a natural born entrepreneur. Never afraid of a new challenge, Joe had businesses that included Joe's Package Store on the west side of San Antonio, where he was lovingly known as “Joe Star”. He was also well known in the community as an outgoing insurance agent with Farmers Insurance, from which he ultimately retired.

Although Joe hailed from Florida, he considered himself a true Texan – cowboy hat, cowboy boots, huge belt buckle and all. He also loved watching westerns – especially John Wayne westerns, crispy tacos, home cooking, sports – football (he loved the Dallas Cowboys), baseball, and in his day, he was an avid golfer.

Joe was a Christian, and long before his health began to fail, he was actively involved in church at Trinidad Lutheran Church and Community Lutheran Church. At the nursing facility in which he recently resided, he faithfully attended the Sunday services there.

He leaves to cherish a lifetime of wonderful memories, his sister, Barbara Jean, and his four children from his beloved former wife, Gloria: Joey Simmons and spouse Vickie, Jay Simmons and spouse Mary Ann, Susan Simmons-Winrow and spouse Charles, and Sherri Simmons-Horton and spouse Derrick. He also leaves a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many other family members and friends.
