John H. Toomsen

U.S. Veteran

John Toomsen, age 88, of rural Geneva, died on Monday, August 4, 2014 at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Ackley with burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:30 PM Thursday with a Moose service to follow at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley. Condolences may be directed to Grace and the family at 2320 Washington Ave, Iowa Falls, Iowa 50126.

John Toomsen was born on April 24, 1926 in Franklin County, Grant Township to Ubbe and Jennie (Janssen) Toomsen. He was educated at Sunny Side School District #1. He started farming on the home farm near Geneva after his discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1947. On January 20, 1949, John married Grace Taylor at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. John served on the country school board, the county A.S.C.S Committee, and was on the Board of Directors for the Franklin County R.E.C. for 21 years. He was a member of the Ackley American Legion #252, the Iowa Falls Moose Lodge #1331 and the United Methodist Church in Ackley.

John is survived by his wife Grace, his children Kenneth (Susan) Toomsen of Ames, Dennis (Vicki) Toomsen of Renwick, Donna (Scott) Toomsen-Cooper of Bradford, James (Ellen) Toomsen of Ackley, 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and his sisters Henrietta Miller of Iowa Falls, Berdean (Ray) See of Independence, Marion (Merlyn) Witte of Cedar Falls and Christine Schurman of Panora.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Grace Roske, Elizabeth Spieker, Johanna Daniels and Florence Schulz and his brothers Clarence, Delbert, Melvin and Norman.
