Richard Milton McDaniel "Dick", 83 years of age of Ellis, Idaho passed from this earthly life on Sunday, August 3, 2014. Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at the Pahsimeroi L.D.S. Church in Patterson, Idaho. Burial in May Cemetery, May, Idaho. Military Honors were provided by Idaho Honor Guard and American Legion Phillip Kirk Post #109. Arrangements were under the direction of the Jones & Casey Funeral Home of Challis, Idaho.
Richard was born July 5, 1931 in Kelly, Idaho to John Milton and Rachel Leona Johnson McDaniel. Born the third of five children, Richard had two older sisters and 2 younger brothers. Richard spent most of his growing up years in Bancroft/Chesterfield, Idaho where the family farmed and raised sheep.
When he was 18 years old the family moved to Blackfoot, where he graduated from Blackfoot High School. It was also here he met his sweetheart and eternal companion. Richard joined the U.S. Navy in 1950 and served his country honorably. After his discharge, he returned to Blackfoot and married Helen Brown on May 4, 1955.
Shortly after they were married, the young couple moved to Patterson, Idaho where Richard worked at the Patterson Mine. Richard's parents had purchased a ranch at Ellis, Idaho in 1949 so after leaving the mine he worked building the Telephone line down the Salmon River and helped his parents on the ranch. Richard and Helen were blessed with 3 children, Mark, Susan and John. After a time Richard purchased the ranch from his parents and the couple raised children and sheep and later cattle. During this time Richard also drove school bus, dug potatoes, and was a janitor at the Challis High School to supplement the family's income.
Richard was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints and held many callings, serving as Bishop, Branch President and on the High Council. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, usually the first to arrive and the last to leave when someone needed help. He was a great husband, dad, grandpa, friend and neighbor.
Richard is survived by his loving wife Helen, children Mark (Tina), Susan Higbee (Varlin) and John (Nancy). Also 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren with another expected any day. He is also survived by his sisters Arlene and Lucile, brothers Fred and Marion and his Aunt JoMaRea Smith. He is preceded in death by his parents John and Leona, and a great-grandson Sawyer Mason.
