George Lukens

George J. Lukens, 90, of Metropolis, Illinois, passed away Friday, August 1, 2014, at Baptist Health Paducah in Paducah, Kentucky with his family by his side.

Born on November 20, 1923, in Joppa, Illinois to George and Nora Lukens. Attended grade school and high school in Joppa and Murray State University.

Entered the U.S. Army on January 25, 1943, attended paratrooper school in Fort Benning, Georgia, and was discharged on February 7, 1946. Married Juanita June Walter on February 23, 1946. Born to this union were two daughters, Beverly June and Beth Ann.

Survived by his wife Juanita Lukens; two daughters Beverly Lukens Bess and husband Rudy of Hazelwood, Missouri and Beth Lukens Lynn and husband Mark of Lenexa, Kansas; two grandchildren Jeffrey Bess of St. Peters, Missouri and Meagan Lynn Campbell and husband Mark of Overland Park, Kansas; one great granddaughter Andrea Jumper of St Louis, Missouri; two nephews Ricky Throgmorton and wife Phyllis of Metropolis, Illinois and Ronnie Summers and wife Becky of Metropolis, Illinois.

Preceded in death by his parents, George and Nora Lukens; one brother Shelby Taylor; three sisters Pauline Taylor Sutfin, Anna Lukens Lauderdale, and Iva Lukens Tubbs; two nieces Joyce Ann Lauderdale Searles and Shelba Jean Lauderdale Morris.

George was baptized in the Immanuel Baptist Church in Metropolis, Illinois, and taught Youth Sunday School.

Employed by Frank Farmer Chevrolet and retired from Electric Energy Incorporated (EEI) of Joppa, Illinois. He also served as a City of Metropolis Alderman of the 4th Ward for 6 years.

George played baseball as a catcher for EEI as well as for Searles and Bormann. He especially enjoyed the St. Louis Cardinals professional baseball team and attended as many games in St. Louis as possible. Of his many loves, George enjoyed refereeing high school basketball games, coaching the Immanuel Baptist Church youth baseball team, Khory League baseball, playing golf, gardening, hunting, and gospel music.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Aikins-Farmers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Metropolis Memorial Gardens with full military rites. Vocals will be performed by Martha Ligon and pall bearers are Ricky Throgmorton, Mark Lynn, Mark Campbell, Ray Ligon, Jerry Mizell, and Jeffrey Bess.

Friends may call to the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home on Thursday, August 7, from 12 noon until the funeral hour.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the charity of your preference.
