Dr. John Stanley Miller

U.S. Veteran

The remembrance service for John Stanley “Stan” Miller, age 78, will be at 10:30 AM Friday, August 1, 2014, at Willow View United Methodist Church, with Rev. Lisa Thompson and Rev. Tom Carruthers officiating. Private family graveside service will precede the service, with arrangements by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home. Stan was born May 29, 1936, in Richmond, Kentucky, the son of John Lester Miller and Nancy Amelia (Greer) Miller. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University’s Model High School in 1952, at the age of 16. After graduation, Stan attended Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, graduating in 1956. Upon graduation from Davidson, he entered Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, graduating with an MD in 1960. He interned at the University of Oklahoma from 1960-1961. While interning at OU, Stan met Charla Mills, and they married in 1961. Stan and Charla had two children, Anne Michelle and Mark Stanley. Stan was drafted into the U.S. Air Force and served from 1961 to 1964. He was sent to Brooks Army Hospital in San Antonio to train as a flight surgeon. While there Stan was named Academic Student of the Class. He was then stationed at Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, Alabama. He finished his residency in 1967, and the family moved to Enid, where Stan established his ophthalmology practice, Enid Eye Clinic. He practiced ophthalmology for nearly 30 years, retiring on his 60th birthday in 1996. He had practiced at both St. Mary’s and Integris hospitals, serving as Chief of Surgery at St. Mary’s. He was a member of Oakwood Country Club, where he served as president in 1993.

In 1984, he met Lois Madison, and after dating several years, they married in 1992. Through the years Stan had played golf in Scotland 26 times, either with his golfing buddies, son Mark, or Lois. He became Enid’s “go-to” guy about where to go, play &/or stay while playing golf in Scotland. His expertise and love of the game was well known throughout the state.

Stan is survived by his wife Lois; daughter Anne (Jon) McNaught and their children Elizabeth, Keith and Lily; son Mark (Angela) Miller and their children Hensley and Holton. His extended family includes stepson Lyle (Kristie) Madison and their children Laney, Kaitlin, Kasey and Ian, and Laney’s son Zayne; stepson Marty (Sondra) Madison and their children Mason, Jordan and Taylor; and stepdaughter Dana (Bryan) Wilson and their sons Trevor and Riley.

In lieu of flowers, it was Stan’s wish that memorials be made to First Tee of Oklahoma, Enid SPCA, or Sooner Golden Retriever Rescue, with Anderson-Burris acting as custodians of the funds.
