Ivan A. Kern, 97, of Mendota died July 19, 2014, in Mendota Lutheran Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Compton with the Rev. Chris Heller officiating. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery, Mendota. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota. Mr. Kern was born Nov. 2, 1916, in Compton to Alfred and Clara (Bauer) Kern. He married Esther Schlesinger on Jan. 19, 1938, in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Compton. He graduated from Paw Paw High School in 1934. Ivan was a lifelong farmer and owner of Kern Fertilizer Service for many years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and various committees. He was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge 1212 and Mendota Moose Lodge. He was a director and past president of Mendota Mutual Ins. Co. He was an avid fisherman. He entered the Mendota Lutheran Home in August 2012. He is survived by three sons; Roger (Carol) Kern and David Kern, both of Mendota, and John (Pam) Kern of Glendale, Ariz.; one daughter, Janis (Warren) Randall of Galesburg; five grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and one brother, Robert Kern of Paw Paw. He was preceded in death by his wife on March 11, 2006; one sister and a granddaughter, Jodi. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the donor’s choice.
