Joyce Marilyn (Lockhart) Wood

U.S. Veteran

ARGYLE --- Joyce Marilyn (Lockhart) Wood, 80, of Durkeetown Rd., Argyle, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 13, 2014 at her home. Joyce celebrated her 80th birthday July 6, with many of her family members in attendance.

Joyce was born and raised in Lake George, the daughter of the late Donald F. and Margaret (White) Lockhart. She spent many years helping in the family business, Lockhart’s Nursing Home.

A graduate of Lake George High School, Joyce continued to support the school through the Alumni Association and the Annual Rachel Ray Alumni Fundraiser. She attended Plattsburgh State College for one year before enlisting in the United States Air Force. She served during the Korean War as a medical service specialist.

After her tour of duty, she returned to Lake George where she continued to work with her family operating the nursing home.

Joyce became an active member of the Mountainside Grange, where she met the love of her life, Ken Wood. Both Joyce and Ken were active members of the Grange and looked forward to the many community activities and dances held by the Grange.

Joyce’s career led her to work at Westmount Infirmary as the Activity Director. Later, she held a position at the Industrial Ladies Garment Union (ILGU), from which she retired. Joyce loved to cook and be around people and she and Ken operated J&K’s Restaurant in Lake George. The last several years, she worked for the Lake George Steamboat Company on the Mohican.

Joyce believed in giving back to her country and community. One of her greatest contributions was serving our veterans through the American Legion. She was a life member of Lake George American Legion Post No. 374. Joyce held various offices at the Post including Post Commander, an office she held for several years. She was also Commander of Warren County and was active with the County and District Oratorical Competitions. She received the high honor of Commander Emerita Warren County-Post 374. She took great pride being involved in all events sponsored by the American Legion.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She enjoyed camping and fishing in the Adirondacks with friends and extended family. Family gatherings and holidays were extremely important for Joyce she could be counted on to keep the party lively and entertaining.

Her smile and laughter were contagious. You could always rely on Joyce to lend a hand to anyone in need.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Wood and their infant daughter, Catherine; her brothers, Donald Lockhart of Westchester, Wallace Lockhart of Lake George, and George Lockhart of South Lake, TX; two stepsons, John Wood of Hudson Falls, and Robert Wood of North Carolina.

Survivors include her loving sons, Tim Wood of Argyle, with whom she resided, Todd Wood of Lake Luzerne, and Byron “Bruce” Wood and his wife, Joanne, of Ft. Edward; her brother, Edward Lockhart and his wife, Jeanne, and their children, Kate and Erin, of Lake George; sister, Ethel Elizabeth Anderson of Colchester, Vermont, and her children, Larry, Jeanne, Jim, Bob, Billy, and Tom, and sister, Heather Andrews and her husband, Mark, of Las Vegas, Nevada, and their children, Kelly, Faith, Brook, and Allison; sisters-in-law, Anne Marie Lockhart and her husband, Louis Strausser, of Lake George and her children, Michael Lockhart and Michelle O’Donnell and Lisa Lockhart of South Lake, TX, and her children, Ben and Megan and Louise Cannizzaro of Ft. Meyers, Florida; two nephews, David and Dale Lockhart; and her devoted grandchildren, Jaime Wood of Ft. Edward, Brittany Wood of Glens Falls, and Kenneth Wood of Hudson Falls.

Joyce will be deeply missed by many, but especially by her American Legion family, her grandchildren, her nephew, Michael Lockhart and niece, Michelle O’Donnell. Both of which she helped raised. Also her much loved Aunt Eleanore DelSignore of Glens Falls. Joyce left her values and joy for life where ever she went and will be missed by all who know her including all her nieces and nephews.
