Leland Cormell

U.S. Veteran

Leland Thomas Cormell, 80, entered into eternal rest on July 11, 2014, in Blythe, California.

He was born Nov. 9, 1933 in Youngstown, Ohio and graduated from Fitch High School in Austintown, Ohio in 1952 where he played fullback for the varsity football team. He served in the United States Army from Nov. 21, 1956 to Nov. 28, 1958. He served the majority of his military career at Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista, Arizona. During this time he was united in marriage to his beloved wife of 56 years, Martha Frieda Weik. Leland later went on to graduate from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor's Degree and Arizona State University with a Master's Degree. He was an English major, with a minor in History and eventually received a Doctorate Degree in Theology.

He began a 37-year teaching career at Greenway Elementary School in Bisbee, Arizona, followed by a brief teaching stint at Palominas Elementary School and Buena High School in Sierra Vista, Arizona. In 1970, he moved to Blythe, California where he spent 34 years teaching at Blythe Junior High/Middle School and Palo Verde High School.

Leland is survived by his wife Martha Cormell; his sons, Leland Cormell, Jr. (DeVonda), Quentin Cormell (Tanya), Shaffer Cormell (Melissa), and Robert Cormell (Catrina); his daughters, Martha Ramirez (Israel), Ruth Wilson (Wayne) and Kelly Cormell-Drapeau (Johnny); his brothers, Shaffer, Quentin and David Cormell; his sisters, Juanita Burgy, Evon Hunt and Selma 'Dots' Bolash; his grandchildren, Rachel Adams Cormell (Gary), Leland Cormell III (Karina), Chad Cormell (Marcel), Jesse Newton (Naomi), Derek Cormell, Ariel Ramirez, Cortney Cormell, Caleb Ramirez, Nicole Wilson, Naomi Cormell, Christiana Cormell, and Christian Cormell; his great grandchildren, Trinity Cormell, Joel Newton, Brody Cormell, and Noah Adams Cormell; and his embraced children, Lori Aldridge, Jimmy Green and Dawn Robinson.

Leland was preceded in death by his parents, Alma and Vonnie Cormell; and his brothers, Laird and Donald Cormell.

A viewing will be held from 6-8:00 p.m., July 17, 2014 at Frye Chapel, 633 N 7th St, Blythe.

A Celebration of Life will be July 18, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the First Assembly of God Church, 140 S. Willow Ave, Blythe, with Pastor Gary Weik officiating.

A graveside service will be July 19, 2014 at 3 p.m., at the Bisbee-Lowell Evergreen Cemetery, 9 Old Douglas Rd, Bisbee, Arizona.
